RUN SOUTH AFRICA FAQS

Why here?
If you were to take the best features of all of our destinations and put them together in one location, the result would be SOUTH AFRICA. Endless kilometers of trails to explore, cliffs plunging into the ocean, rugged mountains, idyllic vineyards, turquoise seas, sandy beaches, copious wildlife and a fascinating mix of cultures found nowhere else. And, most importantly, an off-the-beaten-track feel that lends itself to the type of experiences that cannot be written into any itinerary, but that must be discovered in person.

What’s included in the trip cost?

The trip price includes pre-trip communication & guidance, airport transfers, all accommodation, all meals & snacks, water, wine tasting, transportation, drivers, experienced guides, organized, supported runs, a canopy tour, safari drives, all permits / entry fees and Rogue Expeditions swag. In short, just about everything is covered from the moment you land until the moment you leave!

What isn’t included in the trip cost?

The cost does not include flight, alcohol (one wine tasting is included), tips or personal purchases/extra activities.

Why isn’t the flight included?
Airfare is not included in the price. Let’s be honest, we are all unique and your schedules (and originating airport!) are no exception.   Come early, stay late.  Participants will be responsible for booking their travel arrangements and ensuring that they arrive and depart according to the specific instructions for your chosen itinerary (for this trip, you must arrive in Cape Town no later than 3pm on the first day and depart Port Elizabeth / Gqeberha no earlier than 2pm on the final day. If you choose to arrive/depart outside of those parameters then you will be responsible for the transport arrangements). Suggestions and guidance will be provided once you are signed up.

How far do I have to be able to run?
There is no set requirement, but we recommend that you be comfortable with daily running or at least hiking (note: most people don't run every day at home, but have no problem doing so during a trip!). All routes are adjustable in terms of distance (expect daily options of 3-12 miles) and plans will be tweaked according to the ability mix of the group. As with all of our trips, you always have the option of taking the day off if needed AND there are always ways to add distance if desired!

What sort of terrain will we be running on?
The terrain will be a mix of single track trails, dirt roads, and a little bit of pavement - expect to encounter rocky, slippery footing on occasion, and plenty of hills. While we will always offer options for a variety of ability levels, to maximize your experience we strongly encourage all participants to prepare by spending some time on trail and making a point to do both uphill and downhill running!

What time of day will be be running?
The time of day will vary depending on where we are and where we’re headed, but typically we’ll be running mid-morning and finishing with lunch. The key is to just relax and roll with it – it’s not about “getting it in,” but rather about exploring a brand new place each day!

What will we do when we aren’t running?
Lots! We will go on a treetop canopy tour, learn about the rich history of the area, enjoy wine tasting, log some spectacular hiking, spot elephants on safari and enjoy plenty of time for the most important local tradition: kicking back with great food and company!

Can my non-runner spouse/friend come too?
Non-runners are welcome as long as they don't mind hanging out with a bunch of runners and a daily schedule that flexes around the planned run; it typically works out just fine if they enjoy hiking. If you aren't sure whether it's a good fit, drop us a line and we can talk through it!

What will the hotels be like?
The accommodation is a mix of boutique hotels, farmstays, friendly B&B-style hotels and a safari lodge. We use unique, family-run establishments whenever possible for an authentic experience with local impact. You can expect clean, comfortable, memorable places each night!

Can I have my own room at hotels?
Possibly! We occasionally have a limited number of single rooms available after the balance due date (3 months prior to departure). The boutique properties that we use only have so many rooms, so we cannot guarantee how many will be available until we know the final group size. You can indicate your interest when you register and we will offer single rooms in the order in which you registered.

Is it safe?
It’s no secret that South Africa has a reputation for high crime rates, stemming from years of apartheid and the resulting social and economic inequality. However, it’s important to keep things in perspective and realize that much of that crime is happening in very specific areas; as with most places in the world, as long as one uses common sense and takes basic precautions, the vast majority of travelers encounter no issues whatsoever. Our trip is produced in partnership with a local team of logistics experts who also happen to be avid runners who know the area inside and out, and the trails that we utilize have been selected with not only amazing views, but also your security in mind. There is no reason not to expect a completely safe, relaxed and amazing adventure of a lifetime!

What is the weather like?
Beautiful! October is springtime in the southern hemisphere, and is generally dry and warm with an average high of 75F/24C and an average low of 60F/15C. But like much of the world these days, weather patterns in South Africa are less predictable than they used to be and it’s best to prepare for everything!

What sort of food will we be eating?
Menus will focus on a diverse mix of regional specialties and traditions. Breakfasts will offer a wide range of hearty cooked and lighter continental options. Lunches will be nice picnics and cafes with plenty of fresh, healthy options (think sandwiches, salads, curries). Dinners will feature a mix of restaurants and home cooked meals, and of course you will get to experience a traditional South African braai (bbq) and potjie! Seafood is abundant and fantastic. Most dietary requirements are easily accommodated, though we always recommend that you contact us first if you have a unique combination of special requirements. Come hungry!

What sort of vehicles will we be traveling in?
We will be traveling in clean, spacious minibuses with professional drivers.

What should I pack?
We’ll provide guidance and a detailed packing list after you sign up, but do note that trail running shoes are recommended and that a large handheld water bottle or hydration pack is required. A friendly reminder: packing light will make everything easier for you (and everyone else)!

Should I opt for the early arrival package?
If you’ve got the time then…YES. The hike up Table Mountain is steep, challenging, jaw-dropping gorgeous and unlike any other hike you’ve ever done. The package includes an arrival dinner with our guides, accommodation, breakfast the next morning and then a day spent knocking out this iconic route with an expert local guide and a packed lunch while the rest of the group arrives at the airport. Note that we must have at least 4 people onboard to offer this, so please don’t book travel until we give you the green light!

Should I tip?
Your entire trip will be spent with drivers and guides who will go above and beyond to create an unforgettable experience for everyone. Tips are not expected but always very much appreciated. The amount is completely up to you, and any gratuities will be split equally amongst the team.

If I change my mind or something comes up, can I cancel?
We know that life happens, and on occasion a participant will have to back out of a trip. As most of our costs are paid well in advance, we have set a cancellation policy that applies to all trips. You should obtain travel insurance to cover potential cancellations on your part.

If you cancel:

  • Within 30 days of signup (but more than 90 days from departure): Full refund

  • 90+ days from the trip start date (but after the 30 day grace period): Deposits are non-refundable

  • 61-90 days from the trip start date: 50% of total payment refunded**

  • 60 days or less from the trip start date: No refunds

*If you register using a transfer credit, you may transfer again without penalty within 30 days of signup but will not be eligible for a refund

**This only applies to participants who have paid their balances on time. If you do not pay the balance by the due date and cancel after the fact, your deposit is non-refundable.

Can I switch to another trip?
If you wish to transfer your deposit from one trip to another you must notify us at least 120 days prior to your original departure date.  A fee of $150 per person will apply and will be deducted from your original deposit.  If you notify us less than 120 days prior to the proposed departure date the refund policy applicable to cancellations will apply. Deposit transfers may only be made once, and must be made to another trip departing within 12 months of your original departure date.

What if Rogue Expeditions cancels the trip?
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had never cancelled a trip and we hope that going forward we never have to again. But, it is a possibility and here is what happens if it happens:

If we cancel a trip due to low participant numbers, you will be notified no later than 60 days prior to departure and will receive the option of a full refund or transfer to an alternate trip.

If a trip is cancelled at the last minute due to external events outside our reasonable control (natural disasters, terrorism, etc) we will issue full refunds less any unrecoverable costs. This type of scenario is unlikely but always a possibility - get that travel insurance!

How do I sign up?

You can find the Sign Up button on the Details page as soon as registration is open. A $600 deposit will reserve your spot, and balances are due 3 months prior to the trip start date. As soon as you register you’ll receive a link to the packing list, destination info, guide contacts and more, then your guide will begin direct group communication about 4 months prior to departure. Spots are first come-first serve, so don’t wait!
